'WILLIAM ERNEST CASTLE graduated in 1889 from Denison University,
near his home in Ohio, which he and his brothers attended seriatim [ipse
dixit], having principally studied the classics but with a developing
interest in natural history and the then controversial Darwinian idea of
evolution. He taught Latin at Ottawa University (Kansas), 1889-92,
collecting and identifying the flora of this region in his spare time, and
there met among his students his future wife, Clara Sears Bosworth of
Wellsville, Kan. From 1892 to 1895 he studied zoology at Harvard
University (A.B., 1893; A.M., 1884; Ph.D. (under E. L. Mark), 1895). Married
in 1896, he taught vertebrate anatomy at the University of Wisconsin
(1895-96), biology at Knox College, Galesburg, Ill. (1896-97), and was
then recalled to Harvard where he became a professor in 1908. Until his
academic retirement in 1936, and afterward as a Research Associate at
the University of California at Berkeley, he engaged in animal breeding
and its analysis - the "experimental study of evolution" - which was to
become the new science of genetics. Many of the second generation of
American geneticists were trained by him and by his colleagues at
Harvard's Bussey Institution at Jamaica Plain, Boston. His children were
William Bosworth, Henry Fassett (deceased), and Edward Sears Castle,
born at 10 Ash Street Place, Cambridge, Mass., whence in 1907 the
family removed to a new home built at 186 Payson Road, Belmont.
Subsequent to 1936, he lived continuously in Berkeley, California.'
