'ROBERT PARKINSON, the oldest of eight children and educated by his
father, was described as "a great reader, a teacher in early life, and a
scholarly and capable man". Nevertheless about 1810 he bought virgin
land in the extreme north of N.H., at East Columbia on the COnnecticut
River, cleared it and built a log cabin, and after a year there alone
brought to it his bride, Elizabeth Kelso of New Boston, N.H. Their house
became the focus, serving also as school and meeting house, for others
settling in this then wilderness area. Hard times in the early 1820s
(possibly the collapse of the earlier Vt.-N.H. potash export boom) led to
the loss of this farm, and the family moved down to a small place owned
by Kelso relatives in New Boston, N.H. Eight children were born to this
marriage, the fifth being Frances Parkinson (1819-1905), whose
memoirs dictated in her old age give much of the information reported
here and below.'
