'AUGUSTUS CASTLE (later known as "Deacon Augustus", from his role in
the Baptist church; see "Alexandria and St Albans Township -- Licking
County, Ohio", edited in part by his grandson Walter Castle, 1952) is said
to have been in Underhill, Vt., which adjoins Jericho. He served four
days as a private in the War of 1812, in which year he was 21. In 1816
he married Almira Lane in Vermont, and their son William Augustus was
born there in 1823. The family emigrated to Granville, Ohio, where he
farmed, in 1830. Six other children were born to this marriage, several
of whom married and migrated to Missouri and to Oregon in the 1850s.
By this pattern were the midwest and the west populated. (An older
bnrother of Augustus, Jonathan Castle (1788-1834), had independently
migrated from Vermont to Cleveland, Ohio, where his son William B.
Castle became Mayor, 1855-56).'
